Dating Tip: Spontaneous Combustion

Wouldn't you just love to have the date of your dreams say "yes" the FIRST time you asked her or him out? Of course you would! Here's a secret: not even the most "yes" 100% of the time!

What's the difference between them and you? Spontaneous combustion! What's that, you ask?

The most popular person has prepared and practiced their best pickup lines so they sound "spontaneous." Even if the lines sound corny, contrived, or terrifically witty, they have been practiced over and over again, usually in front of a mirror, until they sound spontaneous.

Here's how to create spontaneous combustion for your dating life:

1. Come up with 5 funny lines. If you're not a funny person, use the "did you know" questions, i.e., Did you know you're supposed to fall in lust with me because you're drinking Coke (or whatever it is they're drinking)? Smile shyly.

2. Practice saying them in the mirror (yes, it's difficult and awkward at first). Keep doing it until seeing yourself in the mirror doesn't bother you. Make sure you look yourself in the eyes while saying the lines over and over. It may only take 5 times, it may take 100 times until the lines feel comfortable for you.

3. Say the lines differently each time until you find a way that you like best.

4. The next time you meet someone you want to date, go up to them and say, "Hi, would you mind if I asked you a quick question?" Wait for their answer. It will almost always be yes. "I'm kind of shy and I wanted to know if this is a good question to ask." Then say your line. Then ask, "Do you think that would work on that gal (or guy) over there?" If they say no, ask what would be a better line.

5. Keep practicing. You WILL start getting more dates because of your "spontaneous combustion."
