Finding something new and interesting to do for your date night can be a challenge.

It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut or to avoid date night altogether because you think you need to spend a fortune to have a good time. This simply isn’t true.

1. Play board and card games.

A little playful competitiveness will make things more fun. You can also add twists by saying “If I win this game, you have to do — for me.”

Playing games is becoming a lost art however it can be a foundation for greater conversation and learning more about your partner.

2. Surprise your partner by making the ordinary a little more unique.

If he or she is enjoying a good book, remove the bookmark and replace it with a note that says, "I bet you’ll never guess where I’ve hidden your bookmark." If they always turn the TV on when they come home from work, tape a note around the television that says, "Wouldn’t you rather turn me on?" instead.? Yes it’s a little cheesy, but have fun with it.

3. Generating significant memories is another way to be romantic on a budget.

Life is full oh AH HA moments and these are usually the things we talk about and share. Creating these moments is not just about the two of you sitting around and waiting for them to happen.

They happen when you get out and experience life. It may be helping others through charity work, just mingling with people in places you would not normally go.

There was a great program on TV called "People on the Streets" where someone was randomly picked on the street and followed? to learn more about them. Every episode was amazing seeing the differences and experiences we all have.

4. As a surprise, buy that movie and recreate that specific romantic kiss

Look for movies that you’ll both enjoy. Get them at the library, where you can rent them for free or at low cost. Cuddle up together under a cozy blanket and make hot chocolate or tea if it’s cold outside. If it’s warm, make iced tea or a special cocktail. Burn some incense or scented candles to improve the ambiance.

5. If you want to plan the ultimate romantic evening but funds are low, shut down the electricity (it is up to you whether or not you tell him or her!). You won’t have any distractions or heat, so it is up to both of you to maintain the warmth and entertain each other.

6. Learn something "new" together

Take dance lessons, take an art class or learn to ice skate together! Take a day trip to a new place neither of you have ever visited before. If you look back on your life, you probably connected with people whom you shared new events or experiences, something you experienced together for the first time. Those experiences create closeness. Find something that can be a "first" for the two of you. You might also develop a new interest the two of you can enjoy!
