5 Bad First Date Ideas
Posted on March 20, 2011 by Kelly Hamilton.
First dates don’t always go as well as planned. Maybe there is no chemistry or there are too many awkward pauses between conversations. Let’s face it, guys: you can’t control every aspect of a first date. Fortunately, you can definitely control the location and the general theme or idea. The location of the first date can mean the difference between a romantic second date and never seeing each other again.
The only problem is that there are literally thousands of first date ideas to choose from. While no one can provide the perfect idea for you and your date, we can share some not so great first date ideas. Do not try these at home our team are trained professionals and you might get hurt. You have been warned!
These ideas are in no particular order (all of them are equally bad).
1. The Movies
Many men believe that if they let the woman choose the movie, this is a great first date idea. Those men are wrong. First of all, women like to connect emotionally on first dates. Taking her to the movies, where people will throw popcorn at you if you make too much noise, is not exactly the way to spark conversation. Second of all, even if she agrees to a second date, you still know next to nothing about her. How are you supposed to plan that second date?
2. Work Event
Nothing says “I needed a date last minute so I didn’t look like a loser in front of my co-workers” quite like taking a woman to a work event on the first date. Women are interested in what you do for a living, but they aren’t interested in seeing it firsthand on the first date. There is nothing romantic about cubicles and office supplies.
3. Family Event
You love your family and they are most likely wonderful people, but women do not want to meet your mother on the first date. Meeting someone’s family is a very personal thing, which is why you should know the woman for more than three hours before introducing her to mom and dad. A family event will make her think you’re moving too quickly. Ever heard of a stage five clinger?
4. A Club
Taking a woman to a club may or may not be a good idea. This really depends on the type of club you go to and whether she enjoys the music and environment. A lot of clubs can be crowded and smoky and just as with the movies, it will also likely be difficult to have any sort of meaningful conversation over the noise. That said, a club might be a nice compliment to other activities earlier that day again it really depends on your date’s taste in music and the type of club. Best to double check on this one or wait until date number two when you know each other better and a have better idea of her likes and dislikes.
5. A Coffee Shop
A coffee shop says one of two things. Either you want to get to know her better through deep, meaningful conversation, or you are running short on cash and Two and a Half Men is on in an hour. The first date is not the time for taking risks. Play it safe and stay away from Starbucks this time!
